Nick U.K. has clinched its first ever sale of an original production to a British broadcaster by placing kids comedy series Renford Rejects, with Channel 4.

The 13 x 30-minute show, which tells the story of a group of kids who form a soccer team, emerged from Nick’s global development group. It will air on C4 this summer in a mid-morning slot.

The deal is a boost for Nick U.K., which has only recently taken its first steps into original production. With C4 having acquired the first series, Nick U.K. has now announced plans for a second batch of 13 episodes, which are poised to enter production this summer. At an estimated £70,000 per episode, Renford comes in at the low end of kids drama budgets in the U.K.

Nick U.K.’s ambition to create more tailored programming for its marketplace is also reflected in its recent decision to commission Spider and Fly, which came as part of the Nick family’s efforts to generate new animated characters. Created by U.K.-based producer Elm Road on the Box, Spider and Fly is 12 x 60 seconds and will appear as part of Nick’s global August showcase Toons from Planet Orange. AF
