Last month it was Smelly Telly, now it’s signed telly. In addition to Cartoon Network Europe’s eight channels in eight languages and subtitled services in the U.K. and Spain, Cartoon Network UK is regularly airing a signed cartoon for deaf and hard of hearing viewers.

Ed, Edd n Eddy began airing with signing in June, and as the signed version is seen by everyone watching the U.K. feed, they went with the entertaining presence of Daryl Jackson as the signer, whose on-screen description of the show was described as ‘useful’ and ‘funny’ in focus testing. Currently this is the only show being signed (it is also available with audio description as an optional service), however CNE is also increasing its closed captioning and adding audio description for the blind.

In the U.K., The Powerpuff Girls is audio-described every day, and it as well as Dexter’s Laboratory, Cow and Chicken, Ed, Edd n Eddy and I am Weasel are all shown with closed captioning as an optional service.

The possibility of launching signed toons elsewhere is something that Cartoon is looking at. Independent Media Services is providing the service.
