Vanessa Chapman’s average working day may have gotten a little longer since she bought Create TV and Film from Denmark’s Kirkbi in February. But that’s what it’s going to take to reshape the company into a full-fledged IP management house.
Chapman’s new umbrella organization is named Create Media Ventures Limited, reflecting her intention to refocus on balancing proprietary co-productions with projects from third-party clients to fully utilize the company’s expertise in story and IP development and ancillary brand management. She says working on the Bionicle brand with Lego (which will stay with Kirkbi) helped set the company up to handle more back-end activities, and she wants to take advantage of this infrastructure going forward.
Chapman is taking a less-is-more approach to her development slate, and she’ll be talking to buyers in Cannes about a new animated comedy co-production for six- to 11-year-olds. The project is based on a major entertainment and music brand, but about her partner, Chapman would only say, ‘It’s a leading entertainment company that’s a force to be reckoned with in the international community.’
