We promised you interviews with the biggest of cheeses, and this time we sat down with the real deal, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends’ Cheese. His series’ creator, and mind behind The PowerPuff Girls, Craig McCracken also joined in the conversation. Read on.
Cheese, what exactly is it about chocolate milk that you like so much?
I LIKE CHOKLIT MILK!!
Are you on any medication?
CHOKLIT MILK!!
What keeps you up at night?
I pooted.
Uh Craig, where do you get the inspiration for new Foster’s characters? Anyone we might know?
Well the basic idea of Foster’s was inspired by my dogs, Buckaroo and Lucy who were both rescues. The core characters’ personalities are based on the archetypes you might find in a dog shelter. I guess Mac and Bloo are a bit like me in different stages in my childhood, and Frankie is loosely based on my wife, Lauren. As far as creating new characters go, we really try and think of what type of personality would be funny, would play off the other characters and then drive the story.
Foster’s is a show both kids and adults watch. How’d you manage that?
Basically, by not trying to cater to either of them. We don’t sit down and ask ourselves ‘What will a kid like’ or ‘How can we make this Adult?’ We just let our characters tell the stories honestly and naturally and hope the personalities, relationships, and situations our characters find themselves in are universal enough to appeal to people of all ages.
This is sensitive ground for some creators, but we were wondering how much are you involved with Foster’s consumer product development?
As much as I can be. The main thing I always stress when it comes to products is keeping the soul of the character alive in any product that is made. There are lots of talented people working in consumer products who work really hard at doing just that. There are lots of great things in the works for this year for apparel, home décor, and toys! Hopefully they will appeal to people as much as the show has.
Back to you, Cheese. Who is your best friend?
CHOKLIT MILK!
What’s next move career-wise?
Pooted.
You have diagnosed yourself with quite a number of ailments, how do you deal with them all?
BEEP BOP BOOP! Is living at Foster’s fun, terrible or terribly fun?
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Do YOU have any imaginary friends?
DOITAGAIN! DOITAGAIN! DOITAGAIN! DOITAGAIN!
Craig, the final question for you. Anything new coming up for your first hit property, The PowerPuff Girls?
Actually yes, I’m thrilled to say that the Season 1 DVD of The Powerpuff Girls will be released this summer! I’ve been very involved with putting it together, and we’re really gearing it for the true fan. I recently realized that a kid who was between the ages of six and 11 when the show first premiered is now 16 to 22! So with that in mind, we’re filling the DVD with all kinds of extras that might appeal to the more ‘grown up’ fan. It’s kind of like a little time capsule that tells the history of PPG from my first student film to the show premiering on Cartoon Network!
