People moves: Borders Group hires new non-book merch VP

Ann Arbor, Michigan-based book retailer Borders Group has upped Michael J. Oprins to the newly created position of VP of merchandising for non-book products.

Ann Arbor, Michigan-based book retailer Borders Group has upped Michael J. Oprins to the newly created position of VP of merchandising for non-book products.

Oprins, who’s been with Borders for more than 18 years, will be responsible for leading buying teams in non-book categories, including music, DVD, bargain, digital, newsstand, calendars, games, trend gifts and candy.

He brings more than 25 years of retail experience to his new position, including several leadership posts at Borders Group, ranging from Waldenbooks district manager and divisional merchandise manager to director of merchandising within the children’s and calendar businesses. Oprins also served in several management positions with retailers like Toys ‘R’ Us and McDonald’s prior to joining Borders.
