London-based Park Entertainment is gearing up for Cannes, where it’ll be shopping around its first full kids and family series.
CEO Jim Howell is banking on K9 (26 x half-hours) for the eight to 14 crowd, based on a character created by Bob Baker and Dave Martin from the original Doctor Who series in the ’70s.
The title robot canine is animatronic and CGI, while the rest of the world, including the three teenagers at the heart of the sci-fi adventure series, is set in a near-future live-action London as the trio and K9 help to save the earth from aliens, monsters and other human threats.
Currently in post-production, with special effects being handled by Brisbane, Australia’s Cutting Edge, the series budget is pegged at roughly US$400,000 per ep. Howell says the first 13 episodes will be ready for delivery before the end of the year, with the remaining 13 to be delivered by the end of April 2010.
He hopes that K9 will be the first of many kids series for the prodco and, in fact, already has two animated projects lined up that he’s looking to announce before MIPCOM – one preschool and another for the ages eight-and-up set.
