China gets local adaptation of Disney’s High School Musical

It looks like the High School Musical phenomenon is about to hit China, as Disney starts production on its third local co-pro project for the property.

Pairing up with Shanghai Media Group and Huayi Brothers Media, the house of mouse’s Disney High School Musical: China is slated for cinematic release in summer 2010. Tailored for Chinese audiences, this take on the story of a new student meeting a young man with whom she shares a secret passion for singing was in development for more than a year.

The co-pro is being filmed in Shanghai and features six new young stars from across China. It will be directed by Chen Shi-Zheng and produced by Janet Yang.
