Marvel Entertainment is headed to the small screen with a new TV division, Marvel Television, to be headed by former comic book writer and Heroes vet Jeph Loeb.

Loeb will serve as EVP for the new TV arm and will be responsible for choosing which of Marvel’s 5,000 characters will be developed into live-action and animated TV series. Loeb will also oversee the development and distribution of live-action, animated and direct-to-DVD series. He will report to Dan Buckley, Marvel publisher and president of print, animation and digital.

Marvel’s venture into TV is an effort to grow the company’s portfolio of both known and unknown comic characters and to prime its brands for more transmedia opportunities.
