Scholastic editors have compiled a list of what they have deemed the top-10 trends in children’s books from 2010.

Among the innovations emerging this year were new formats and platforms for storytelling as well as a rejuvenation of some classic genres.

On a more granular level, the top trends include: The expanding Young Adult audience, the popularity of dystopian fiction (The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner), mythology-based fantasies (Percy Jackson, Goddess Girls), multimedia series that go beyond the printed page, a focus on popular characters from all media, the shift in picture books to beginning reader books (publishers are publishing about 25% to 30% fewer picture book titles), the return to humorous books, the rise of the diary and journal format, special-needs protagonists (My Brother Charlie, Mockingbird) and paranormal romances that go beyond vampires.
