Following last week’s story on a new crop of kid-friendly iPad apps, another round of mobile games and eBook apps are launching in the space.

HIT Entertainment, for one, is releasing a series of Thomas & Friends story-inspired mobile and tablet apps by digital developer ScrollMotion. Nine interactive Thomas & Friends iPad titles are available for US$2.99 in the Apple App Store. The new apps, whose titles include Calling All Engines and Thomas Gets a Snowplow, are the first children’s property to be launched on ScrollMotion’s Iceberg Kids v.2 platform, which allows users to ‘Read, Play, Listen and Record.’

ScrollMotion’s apps are developed with HTML5 technology that allows them to be available for one download across all platforms including iPhone, iPod touch, Google Android and other operating systems.

Spanish-based preschool brand, Pocoyo, is bolstering its digital offerings. Creator Zinkia Entertainment has released its Coloring with Pocoyo and Friends app designed exclusively for the iPad. Available in English and Spanish, it allows kids to paint the preschool character and his friends’ coloring pages. The newest digital iteration follows the June 2010 launch of the Pocoyize app, which allows users to create personalized Pocoyo-style avatars.

And Toronto, Canada’s DHX Media is set to launch an iPad app based on the CBeebies-commissioned preschool series Grandpa in My Pocket. The Grandpa in my Pocket: Horatio Heave Ho! ebook will be available in the UK iTunes store at launch, with other territories to follow. Versions for the iPhone and iPod Touch will be made available in the spring. The narrated eBook is accompanied by images from the series and a full music soundtrack.

Also being reformatted as an eBook is the classic title The Little Engine That Could. US book publisher Penguin Young Readers Group has collaborated with digital media agency Smashing Ideas on the interactive children’s book app for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. It features original 1950’s artwork, sound effects, moveable objects and uses either ‘follow along’ or ‘read-aloud’ modes.

And moving from timeless to timely, video game publisher Zoo Entertainment is launching Silly Bandz: The Game on iOS devices. The game incorporates the digital use of the popular silicone wristbands as well as Stella the Puppy, the official bulldog mascot of the brand.
