Girl Scouts of the USA is teaming with personal care brand Dove to deliver leadership and self-esteem programming to girls both in the US and abroad.
The It’s Your Story—Tell It! initiative is a collection of six publications that have been developed for girls in grades K-12. The resources touch on a different theme at each Girl Scout grade-level and encourage girls to take the lead in planning their leadership activities and projects.
The initiative is timed with a 2010 Girl Scouts survey of girls’ social media usage, entitled Who’s That Girl: Self Image in the 21st Century, which found that girls with lower self-esteem are more likely susceptible to negative experiences on social networking sites than girls with high self-esteem. They are also more likely to fall victim to hurtful behavior online and to engage in risky behavior.
The campaign also falls in line with the Dove Movement for Self-Esteem, which emphasizes beauty as a source of confidence, not anxiety.
It’s Your Story—Tell It! is the latest iteration of an ongoing Girl Scouts-Dove partnership, which began in 2002 with the creation of the Uniquely ME! program.
