Conference season is upon us. You’ve already heard about some of our Kidscreen adventures. Now we’re about to embark on the March edition of the speaking circuit, including Game Developers Conference and SxSW. So, in this post are three important things:

1. The details of our talks at the conferences

2. An opportunity to get social with fellow kids media people at GDC and SxSW

3. Other conference talks we’re excited to see at GDC

Here’s where we’ll be talking and what we’ll be talking about:

Game Developers Conference

Guidelines for Successful Mobile Interactive Apps for Children

Monday, March 5, 3pm

Little Hands, Foul Moods and Runny Noses: Developmental Research Meets Emerging Technologies

Thursday, March 8, 5:30 pm

SxSW

What Left 4 Dead Can Teach Us About Kids Games

Tuesday, March 13, 9:30 am

If you’re unable to attend, but are interested in the slides from any of the talks, we’ll have some kind of shareable version in late March. Ping us (kidsGotGame@nocrusts.com) to get on the list!

Be Social

Both GDC and SxSW are huge, with zillions of people who work in all sorts of areas. So when we’re at a giant conference, we try to set up a gathering of kids media people so that we can find each other. If you think you might make it, email us (kidsGotGame@nocrusts.com) and we’ll send you our mobile #s in case there’s any updates.

GDC: Thursday (March 8), 8 am Pacific at The Grove (690 Mission St. between Annie St & 3rd St). Yes it’s early. I’m sorry. It’s worth it. I promise.

SxSW: OK. Haven’t gotten my act together on this one yet, but we’ll get together on Monday (March 12). Email if you’re interested and we’ll send you the details as soon as we sort it out!

Brilliant People

We also find that the best recommendations for what to see at a conference come from those who have been there before. So for what it’s worth, here’s three sessions that I’m planning to attend at GDC.

GDC

●      GDC Microtalks 2012: One Hour, Ten Voices, Countless Ideas

○     Why? Fast-paced downloads on the thoughts of the best of the best. This is Carla’s not to be missed session.

●     Rapid, Iterative Prototyping Best Practices

○     Why? Iterative development is great, especially for the usability needs of kids, but it’s really hard to do. A lot of people think they’re iterative, when they’re not.

●     Upgrade Humanity in 60 Seconds Flat: The Game Design Challenge 2012

○     Why? This is a long standing tradition at GDC. Brilliant designers, sometimes strange ideas, great insights!

This is actually our first time at SxSW, so if you know of not-to-miss sessions, please let us know! (Also happy to take recommendations for restaurants…)

Otherwise, if you’re around either of the conferences and want to meet up, please give us a yell (kidsGotGame@noCrusts.com)! If you know of a great session, also please let us know. We’ll be tweeting as much as possible (@noCrusts).
