The recipients of the British Animation Awards were announced last night at the British Film Institute in London including results from a national poll to name Britain’s favorite animated character ever.

Cartoon Network’s The Amazing World of Gumball snatched up two BAAs, taking home the award for best children’s series and the children’s choice award.

Preschool series Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom (“Acorn Day”), from Astley Baker Davies for Channel 5, Nick Jr. and Entertainment One, took top honors in the best preschool series category besting Astley Baker Davies’ Peppa Pig (“The New House”) and Silvergate Media’s Octonauts (“The Blobfish Brothers”).

And in the best mixed-media children’s series category, Bookaboo (“Johnny Vegas”) from Happy Films for CiTV took home the BAA.

Other BAA winners in children’s categories included The Gruffalo’s Child (Magic Light Pictures in association with Studio Soi), which was a co-winner of the best long-form category with the Quay Brothers’ Maska (Polish Cultural Institute in London and Se-Ma-For Studios Poland).

And while the competition was stiff, one animated character beat out popular shortlisted nominees, including Wallace and Gromit, Postman Pat and Peppa Pig, as Britain’s favorite animated character . Coming out on top was duffle-coat wearing, marmalade-sandwich eating Paddington Bear, who has been going strong since 1958 when he first appeared in the HarperCollins Children’s Books classic A Bear Called Paddington.

The brand about the bear from Peru that gets adopted by an English couple has since spawned two television series, musical stage plays, an extensive licensing and merchandising program and more than 25 million copies of the books have been sold worldwide and been translated into more than 20 languages.
