In a deal with  film studio Lionsgate, ABC Family has purchased the network TV premiere rights to the hit YA-targeting film The Hunger Games and the second film in the franchise Catching Fire.

Lionsgate will release Catching Fire in theaters globally on November 22, 2013, and both films will air on ABC Family in 2014.

The news comes as the movie version of Suzanne Collins’ first book in her best-selling trilogy had the best opening weekend for a non-sequel ever bringing in an estimated $US155 million at the North American box office.

It’s also the third-best debut ever revenue-wise, behind last year’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two and 2008’s The Dark Knight.
