Rovio Entertainment, the Finnish mobile developer behind gaming juggernaut Angry Birds, has teamed up with DreamWorks Animation on a new mobile game based on the upcoming 3D film The Croods, which hits US theaters on March 22.

The game will be made available for iOS and Android devices one week before the film’s release and will feature hunter-gather-type games, as well as a short animated clip. Gameplay is based on the film, which follows the Crood family’s comedic antics while living in the Stone Age.

This isn’t the first mobile game based on a blockbuster film for Rovio. In March 2011, the developer launched Angry Birds Rio as a marketing tie-in for the Fox film Rio.  With the help of piggybacking on animated blockbusters like Rio, the Angry Birds brand has inspired a hugely successful licensing campaign, with a full 30% of Angry Birds revenues  coming from numerous consumer products extensions.
