Toys ‘R’ Us is embarking on a major business expansion in 2013. The Wayne, New Jersey-based toy retailer plans to open more than 100 stores internationally, relocate and convert 14 stores to its TRU/Babies ‘R’ Us side-by-side format, and add 22 new licensed stores.
These new stores will be located throughout 21 of the 36 countries in which Toys ‘R’ Us currently has a presence, adding more than 900,000 square feet of retail space to the company’s store portfolio.
The most significant expansion plans this year are for China. By the end of the year, the company plans to operate 51 stores in 27 cities throughout the country. In October 2011, Toys’R’ Us acquired the majority stake in its business in Greater China and Southeast Asia from Fung Retailing.
The second largest area of growth for the company is the US, where 19 new, converted or relocated stores are planned to open, including nine new Toys ‘R’ Us Outlet stores, bringing the total number to 25 outlet locations nationwide.
New store sizes vary by country and range from 3,000 to 60,000 square feet.
