HarperCollins US and UK have picked up the English-language rights to author James Frey’s young adult interactive trilogy Endgame in their respective territories and its theatrical rights are now in the hands of Twentieth Century Fox.

Endgame is a fully integrate multimedia franchise that consists of three novels, 15 original eBook novellas, YouTube videos, search and image results, mapping coordinates, social media and interactive gaming. The first book in the trilogy, Endgame: The Calling, is at the center of an interactive project launched through a partnership with HarperCollins, Frey’s company Full Fathom Five and Google’s Niantic Labs. The book itself will be published on October 7, 2014. Each trilogy will feature an interactive puzzle that’s embedded within the text, and for The Calling, when the puzzle is solved an event will be broadcast live on YouTube.

HarperCollins has secured the rights to three books and nine digital novellas.

As for the Fox deal, the agreement struck this past weekend also encompasses the three books and nine interstitial novellas. Frey is writing the script for the first film, which will be produced by Temple Hill’s Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, the producers behind the blockbuster Twilight Saga.

Google’s Niantic Labs, meanwhile, is developing a location-based augmented reality game, and the company will also be publishing six Endgame novellas exclusively at the Google Play store. The game is expected to launch on Android and iOS devices in late 2014.

Through Full Fathom Five, the integrated media and production company Frey founded in 2010, more than 40 books have been developed along with television shows, films and videogames. The company is behind I Am Number Four, which was produced as a major motion picture by Michael Bay and DreamWorks.

Endgame will be released simultaneously around the world in October in more than 30 languages. Additional foreign partners include Intrinseca (Brazil), Gallimard Jeunesse/Le Groupe Madrigall (France), Gakken (Japan), Oetinger (Germany) and Salani (Italy).
