Featuring more green slime than ever before and reaching more than 375 million households globally, Saturday’s 27th annual Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in L.A. honored a slew of kids’ favorites including winners Jennifer Lawrence, One Direction, Selena Gomez and SpongeBob SquarePants.
Hosted by actor/producer Mark Wahlberg, this year’s event doled out orange blimp awards across 22 categories in film, TV, sports, music and video games. A beefed-up digital presence permeated the event as kids’ votes were cast across all of Nick’s digital platforms including Nick.com, the Nick App on iOS, Kindle and Android mobile devices and via Nick’s Twitter feed.
Jennifer Lawrence continued her popularity reign snapping up awards for favorite movie actress and favorite female buttkicker. Her massively successful film franchise The Hunger Games also grabbed the favorite movie award for sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Adam Sandler grabbed the favorite movie actor prize for Grown Ups 2 while kids voted Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man 3) as their favorite male buttkicker.
Disney’s Frozen, which just became the top-grossing animated film of all time, was recognized as favorite animated movie and Miranda Cosgrove was voted favorite voice for an animated movie for her work in Despicable Me 2.
In TV, breakout series Sam & Cat won for favorite TV show and one of its stars, Ariana Grande, was voted favorite TV actress. Wipeout took home the prize for favorite reality show, Ross Lynch (Austin & Ally) for favorite actor and the forever popular SpongeBob SquarePants for favorite cartoon.
For music, nods went to Selena Gomez for favorite female singer, Justin Timberlake for favorite male singer, and One Direction nabbed favorite music group and favorite song, categories it won last year too.
In the event’s newly introduced categories, comedian/actor Kevin Hart picked up the award for favorite funny star, NBA star Dwight Howard for most enthusiastic athlete and SpongeBob SquarePants‘ Patrick Star for favorite animated animal sidekick.
Digital winners included Just Dance 2014 for favorite video game and Despicable Me: Minion Rush for favorite app.
Additionally, kids’ TV showrunner Dan Schneider received a special lifetime achievement Award for his work creating hit shows such as iCarly, Drake & Josh, Victorious, and Sam & Cat.
Staying in tune with its tech-savvy viewers, the event featured amped up cross-platform interactive experiences before, during and after the live show utilizing Facebook, Nick.com and Twitter. Activities included polls, real-time updates, exclusive interviews, orange carpet photos, a backstage live companion stream, celebrity GIF and Vine booths, as well as a KCA news blog and KCA-themed online games.
Nickelodeon also launched the digital 2014 Kids’ Choice Awards: The Official Multi-Touch Book, the first-ever book dedicated for a live awards show.
