DreamWorks Animation and Microsoft have launched DreamWorks Dragons Adventure World Explorer, a brand new app based on the hit film How to Train Your Dragon 2 that integrates GPS mapping technology to give kids a more realistic gaming experience.

Currently available at the Windows Phone Store and the Windows Store for free on a variety of Windows phones including the Lumia 930 and on Microsoft Surface tablets, the app for kids ages seven and up uses HERE Maps real-time GPS technology to transform real roads, buildings, lakes and parks, as well as time of day, current traffic conditions and local weather into the game’s fictional Viking land Isle of Berk.

Choosing from a selection of six dragons to fly, users can explore the new world as either main character Hiccup or Astrid.

Among the app’s features are a play-at-home Explore mode featuring quests across 16 real-world cities such as Berlin, Shanghai and Washington D.C., and an on-the-go Train mode where real streets and buildings appear on-screen in kids’ personalized quests while travelling in vehicles.

In addition, the app uses Foursquare social media-based interaction to show the numbers of Vikings near points of interest and lets players unlock new characters and dragons while embarking on a total of 38 quests.

The app launch comes on the heels of DreamWorks’ recent collaboration with tablet-maker Fuhu that incorporates the How to Train Your Dragon world into Fuhu’s Morpho Pods—an immersive tablet experience that uses near field communication technology to link physical play and digital play across toys, video games, interactive storybooks and custom animation.
