Continuing to roll out new innovations around toy design, Mattel has joined forces with software design company Autodesk for a new line of products that will make 3D-printing experiences more accessible to kids.

Under the exclusive collaboration, a series of apps will be produced that allow kids to design their own toys that can ultimately be produced in the real-world via 3D-printing. According to Mattel, the initiative intends to provide a new immersive experience that combines physical toys with digital adventures.

Tapping into creation and customization play trends, the first app is scheduled to launch in the second half of this year, along with a dedicated online hub for Mattel’s 3D-printing initiatives.

The news comes on the heels of Mattel posting its first quarter results, as the toy maker continues to implement its strategy for a rapid turnaround.
