Google has unveiled a number of new features for Google Play in the US that promise to make it easier for parents to find kid-friendly content.
The digital store now has a dedicated family section for apps, games, movies and TV content, as well as a separate category for children’s books.
There are dozens of dedicated character pages for popular kids properties including Peppa Pig, Shaun the Sheep, Peanuts, How To Train Your Dragon, Tom and Jerry and Doc McStuffins, listing apps, books and games starring each iconic IP.
And a number of kids content producers and networks, including Disney, Disney Junior, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, PBS KIDS and Sesame Street, also now have exclusive pages for their apps, games, TV shows, books, movies and music.
Other new features include the option to browse apps by age range, and a new system that labels family-friendly content with Family Star badges showing an age rating.
Notably, apps and games will come with labels that tell users which are ad-supported. Content maturity ratings will also be listed, and updated controls let parents restrict the downloading, purchasing or streaming of inappropriate content.
To support the family-friendly experience, which will continue to roll out globally over the next two weeks, Google Play has launched a raft of new digital content exclusives, including apps such as Crayola DJ (Legacy Games), Cutie Patootie (TabTale), Thomas’s Musical Day for Percy (Speakaboos) and Doozers – Play Along Stories (The Jim Henson Company).
