For this generation of digital natives, touching and swiping their way through the world has become second nature. So it’s only fitting that a new app from Swedish studio Toca Boca that lets kids become the masters of their own digital realm is topping the charts on the App Store.

Toca Life: City is the first in a new series of Toca Life apps. The mobile offering taps into users’ appetites for creativity and open-ended play, allowing kids to explore a digital city that has over three million ways to personalize 29 characters.

And preschoolers are definitely digging it. According to analytics specialist App Annie, Toca Life: City is currently the number-one iPad app for kids under age five in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, Sweden, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Italy, Japan, Russia and South Korea.

It’s also worth noting that Toca Life: City and the Toca Life series were created based on kid feedback from the original Toca Boca: Town app, which lets young users roam a smaller-sized virtual town. The studio has received over 10,000 requests from fans for new features, many of which were incorporated into Toca Life: City. 

User-generation seems to be experiencing something of an upswing lately, in fact. Montreal, Canada-based Budge Studios recently unveiled its own dedicated app creation program, which uses kid feedback in the development process. The program has since launched two apps: Caillou Search & Count and Miss Hollywood Showtime.
