Technicolor has appointed creative executives Sean Mullen and David Kern as the company’s animation and games division’s creative director and technical director of games, respectively.

Mullen most recently did a two-year stint at Disney Interactive as marketing animation lead on the Disney Infinity game franchise. Kern, meanwhile, joins Technicolor from his own game development company nobodinos. Both will be based at Technicolor’s animation studio in Bangalore, India.

With the hiring of Mullen, the studio’s former creative director Owen Hurley has been promoted to executive director of creative and will work from Technicolor Animation and Games’ Hollywood headquarters.

The moves are expected to bolster the Bangalore studio’s range of services, particularly its feature animation and game engine capabilities.

Prior to his time at Disney, Mullen worked with India’s Prana Studios as director of animation (Disney’s Planes and Tinkerbell movies); Sony Pictures Animation (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Hotel Transylvania); and Sony Pictures Imageworks (Stuart Little 1 and 2, Open Season).

Before founding nobodinos in 2012, Kern spent 17 years at Sony Computer Entertainment-owned Zipper Interactive and worked on titles such as Unit 13, Crimson Skies and Mechwarrior3.

The appointments follow a number of significant moves by Technicolor to expand, including its US$600-million acquisition of Cisco’s set-top box biz and its purchase of French animation studios Mikros Image and OuiDO! Productions.
