New York-based prodco Little Airplane Productions has partnered with Japanese broadcaster NHK, NHK Enterprises and American licensing agency Big Tent Entertainment to produce the first long-form content for online sensation Domo.
Featuring the voice of Star Trek’s George Takei as band member Mr. Usaji, the 24-minute special Domo Rock! targets a teenage audience and features theme music from American indie rock band Big D and the Kids Table.
Written and directed by Little Airplane founder Josh Selig, Domo Rock! begins with Domo receiving a call from an agent in L.A. inviting him and his band to play a concert in Hollywood. However, at the airport he’s told he can’t board the plane with his beloved guitar, so he’s now forced to embark on an epic roadtrip by skateboard, train, boat and motorcycle through Cairo, Paris, London and New York to get to his gig on time.
NEP holds Asian broadcasting rights for Domo Rock!, while Little Airplane is handling distribution for all other territories, and the company will be showcasing the special at next month’s Mipcom.
Tsuneo Goda of Dwarf Studios in Tokyo (who also advised on the special) created the furry, brown, animated monster Domo as a mascot to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of NHK’s satellite broadcasting in 1998. Since then, Domo has gone on to become a global brand, appearing in an array of consumer products.
