As the kids entertainment industry revs up for MIP Jr. and MIPCOM over the week in Cannes, France, a steady stream of TV pre-sales have been flowing in ahead of the programming event.
The recently-formed UK-based Zodiak Kids Studios has pre-sold its brand new preschool series Floogals (pictured) to Discovery Kids (Latin America), TVO and Knowledge Network (Canada), Hop! Channel (Israel) and Spectrum Film (Indonesia). Zodiak Kids, which owns worldwide distribution and licensing rights for Floogals, has also appointed Discovery Kids to manage CP rights for the IP in Latin America.
Developed by Zodiak Kids Studio’s UK prodco The Foundation, in conjunction with UK special effects studio Jellyfish Pictures and investment partner Nevision, the 52 x 11 minutes series combines photo real CGI and live-action. The story follows the adventures of pocket-sized aliens Fleeker, Flo and Boo who are on a mission to experience and document their new and exciting surroundings in the peculiar world of the hoomans. It is set to launch on NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment’s 24-hour preschool net Sprout (US) early next year.
Across the pond, L.A.-headquartered The Jim Henson Company has inked a raft of international deals for several of its classic titles. Go Entertainment Group has picked up home video, TVOD and EST rights for Farscape, Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars and The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss in the UK and Ireland; International Production Associates has snapped up Construction Site for home video, SVOD and TVOD in Thailand; Cinedigm Home Entertainment has grabbed US and Canadian SVOD rights for Fraggle Rock and The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss for its OTT Dove Channel. Meanwhile, eOne has licensed Fraggle Rock for home video distribution in Canada.
Also in Canada, indie distributor Picture Box Distribution nabbed rights for new Brazilian kids series Which Monster Bit You? (50 x 23 minutes). Co-produced by SESI-SP and made for TV Cultura Brazil, the live-action series takes place in the World of Monsters, where every time a child draws a monster it comes to life and causes chaos for half-monster Lali and her monster friends Gorgo, Luisa and Dedé. Renowed Brazilian writer/director Cao Hamburger and Teodoro Poppovic created the series, which recently won the Ibero-American Prix Jeunesse award. It is scheduled to air on Discovery Kids Latin America this month.
Staying north of the 49th parallel, Toronto-based Tricon Kids & Family, a division of indie production and distribution company Tricon Films & Television, has locked up international pre-market sales for a host of kids properties. Turkuvaz Media Group Turkey, MBC Middle East, Noga Israel, TVB Hong Kong and Irib Iran have all picked up Zoo Clues, a 26 x 30-minutes series that answers questions about animals. Irib Iran also grabbed On The Spot (45 x 30 minutes), which asks everyday people trivia questions they should, in theory, be able to answer.
In other deals, Tricon Kids & Family has sold biodiversity and ecology-focussed preschool series Wildernuts (26 x seven minutes) to CSC UK; OBI Royal Jet UAE picked up Grass Roots Racing TV (44 x 30 minutes), a motorsports show for kids four to 16; and GEE Qatar Airways nabbed teen travel show Awesome Adventures (20 x 30 minutes).
Turning now down under, pubcaster ABC Australia has scored exclusive Australian TV rights for new live-action animated series Little Roy (52 x 14 minutes) from Ireland/UK-based JAM Media, and the series will on ABC KIDS in 2017. Jointly commissioned by CBeebies and CBBC, with development and production funding support from the Irish Film Board and Northern Ireland Screen, the show (which will air on both aforementioned channels) follows the everyday adventures of a five-year-old boy whose cartoon abilities and enthusiasm lead to mayhem.
