It looks like Nickelodeon is further exploring the world of retro. On the heels of launching ’90s-inspired cross-platform retro destination The Splat on October 5, the kidsnet is turning the dial back to 1971 to revive H.R. Pufnstuf characters in a new Mutt & Stuff preschool special.
Sid and Marty Krofft’s characters from the cult classic H.R. Pufnstuf series, including the titular character, Cling and Clang and Freddy the Flute, will return to kids TV for the first time in more than 45 years in the Kroffts-created Mutt & Stuff live-action special, which is part of an additional 20-episode order greenlit by Nickelodeon.
Production on the special, H.R. Pufnstuf Comes to Mutt & Stuff!, will begin this fall with a premiere date set for early 2016. It sees Stuff’s favorite uncle, H.R. Pufnstuf, come to visit him at the canine school. When H.R. arrives with his friends from Living Island, Stuff goes overboard in an attempt to impress him and make sure everything is perfect.
Set in a unique school for dogs, Mutt & Stuff stars Calvin Millan and his dad, Cesar, star of Cesar 911 and original star of Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan, interacting with a cast of both real dogs and puppets. The live-action series bowed in July. It is the second recent commission for the Kroffts, who recently inked a development deal with Amazon Studios to make a reimagined pilot of their 1970s series Sigmund and the Sea Monsters.
