Direct-to-consumer films continue to be a hit among young audiences, and more MCNs are getting in on the action. Last year, for instance, AwesomenessTV struck gold with its digital hit Expelled, which premiered in the number-one movie slot on iTunes after its release.
Disney-owned Maker Studios has announced its collaboration with Off The Dock, the digital studio operated by Lakeshore Entertainment, to create full-length mockumentary feature Internet Famous, starring a number of YouTubers. Maker talent Shane Dawson (who has 5.7 million subscribers on YouTube), as well as Steve Greene, Amanda Cerny and Christian DelGrosso are part of the film’s lineup.
The story follows the four online influencers as they travel across the US and compete in a fictional talent competition with the hopes of winning their very own TV show.
Internet Famous marks Off the Doc’s second feature film and first in-house feature – it previously co-distributed the direct-to-consumer comedy Man Up, starring YouTuber Kevin Wu.
No specific distribution platforms have yet been revealed. The film marks Maker’s second digital feature following the release of Summer Forever, starring YouTube musician Megan Nicole. That film was distributed across several direct-to-consumer transactional platforms, including iTunes, Vimeo and Google Play.
