In continuing to tap into a young cohort of dance enthusiasts, digital producer DanceOn has added another original program to its lineup.
Dance-Off Juniors, an unscripted series comprised of 10 x 20-minute episodes, will feature three young dancers competing for a cash prize of US$5,000 by performing a number of freestyle and choreographed challenges. The series is scheduled to debut on US telecom giant Verizon’s mobile-only Go90 platform April 20.
Dance-Off Juniors marks the second competitive dance series produced for Go90 by DanceOn, which was co-founded by music legend Madonna. In October, the network released Every Single Step, a competition series produced by So You Think You Can Dance producer Nigel Lythgoe that is focused on finding America’s next big choreographer.
Judges for Dance-Off Juniors include professional dancers and performers Alyson Stoner, Ladia Yates, Todrick Hall and Matt Steffanina. The latter rose to popularity online, posting performances and tutorial videos on his YouTube channel, which now has more than three million subscribers.
Dance has proven to be a popular vertical both in the linear and digital worlds. According to YouTube stats, at least 24 million videos on the platform are related to dance in some way. Some of the most notable videos include the dance-infused music video for Sia’s “Chandelier”, which has been viewed 1.2 billion times. And in recognizing a generation of kids intrigued by the genre, the upcoming summer season of US broadcast hit So You Think You Can Dance will be presented in a new format that opens the competition up to dancers 13 years old and under.
