DHX Television has commissioned a second 30-episode season of Fresh TV’s new teen performing arts drama Backstage for its Canadian net, Family Channel.
Production on the sophomore season of the popular half-hour scripted series will begin this summer in Toronto with a premiere date expected for Family Channel next year.
The music-based series, which bowed in March, follows the ups and downs of a group of talented teens who attend the fictional Keaton School of the Arts. Each episode features dance, instrumental and vocal performances from the series’ stars including Josh Bogert as Miles, Aviva Mongillo as Alya and Mckenzie Small as Scarlett.
Backstage currently airs weekly during Family Channel’s must-see Friday night lineup at 7 p.m. ET/PT.
Originally commissioned by DHX TV last July, the series is executive produced by Fresh TV’s Brian Irving, creator and writer Jennifer Pertsch, and co-creator and show runner Lara Azzopardi, as well as Tom McGillis and George Elliott.
Distributor DHX Media recently sold the series to Disney Channel in multiple territories including the US and the UK.
In related news, three Backstage stars, Josh Bogert, Aviva Mongillo and Mckenzie Small, plus additional performers from the show, will make their performance debuts during Family’s 2016 Big Ticket Summer Concert Tour.
