Canada’s DHX Media and L.A.-based Dentsu Entertainment USA have partnered to develop, co-produce, distribute and jointly manage the licensing for a new Mega Man animated series.

The series will be written and executive produced by Man of Action Entertainment, the writers and EPs behind Disney XD’s Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man and Marvel’s Avengers Assemble.

Mega Man is based on the Capcom video game franchise first launched in 1987. Aimed at kids six to nine and their parents, the new animated series follows an upbeat schoolboy robot who discovers that he can transform into Mega Man, the world’s first robotic superhero.

The global deal will see DHX manage distribution and licensing in the US, in collaboration with Dentsu Entertainment USA. Meanwhile, Dentsu Inc., parentco of Dentsu Entertainment, will manage distribution and licensing in Asia, and DHX will handle all other territories.

The Mega Man franchise includes more than 130 video games on multiple platforms, as well as toys and comics. Two seasons of a previous Mega Man animated series aired in 1994 and 1995 on ABC Family. The new Mega Man series is slated to air in 2017 to coincide with the franchise’s 30th anniversary.
