Popular Australian series Dance Academy is officially sashaying on over to the silver screen, thanks to Germany’s ZDF and ZDF Enterprises and Australia’s Werner Film Productions.

The 90-minute feature film, Dance Academy – The Comeback, will be based on the tween- and teen-skewing drama that aired between 2010 and 2013 in more than 160 countries via broadcasters like ZDF (Germany), Teen Nick and Netflix (US) and Nickelodeon (UK).

Shooting on the film─which will use both Sydney and New York as backdrops─will start this spring, and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Dance Academy – The Comeback follows the return of star ballet student Tara Webster to her studies after a devastating injury sidelined her career. But she’s still drawn to the art form, and is faced with big decisions regarding her future as a dancer.

The film is the latest production to come out of Werner Film. The studio is also behind the live-action series Ready For This, which was just recently acquired by ZDF in Germany.
