A new immersive attraction based on superhero blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy is set to open next summer at Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim. The ride marks the first of more Marvel universe attractions to launch at Disneyland.

Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! will feature popular character Rocket raccoon on a comedic mission to rescue his fellow Guardians from the clutches of the villainous Collector, Tanaleer Tivan.

Disneyland’s The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror will be transformed into the new Guardians attraction beginning in January 2017. The ride will use The Twilight Zone’s mechanical gantry lift, giving park guests the chance to help Rocket on his quest while being immersed in random free-fall ride experiences set to music inspired by the movie’s soundtrack.

Led by Walt Disney Imagineering’s portfolio creative director Joe Rohde in collaboration with the creative minds behind the Guardians of the Galaxy film and comic books, the project was unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.

The ride launch will also coincide with the May 5 US theatrical release of Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which stars Chris Pratt, Kurt Russell, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel and Dave Bautista.
