Paris-based Viz Media Europe (VME) has acquired distribution rights across all platforms for the animated Japanese movie A Silent Voice.

The distributor has nabbed rights for the European Union (excluding the UK), Russia, Turkey and French-speaking African countries.

The Kyoto Animation-produced movie is adapted from a manga series by Yositoki Oima and focuses on issues like school bullying and disabilities. It was the 11th highest-grossing Japanese film in 2016, amassing USD$19.6 million.

A Silent Voice director Naoko Yamada has worked on K-On! and Tamako Love Story.

The movie’s messages on diversity speak to a growing trend within the entertainment industry, especially with the presence of disability at the front and centre of the film.

VME is also currently working with popular property Yo-kai Watch and helping to shepherd its  expansive licensing program in Europe that has amassed more than US$2 billion in retail sales worldwide.
