San Francisco-based children’s educational online marketplace Outschool has announced a US$1.4-million seed round led by Collab+Sesame, a fund launched last year by Sesame Workshop and Collaborative Fund under Sesame Ventures.
As a marketplace for live online classes for K-12 children, Outschool will leverage the investment to expand its web destination and its more than 1,000 classes. Offered by independent teachers via group video chat and messaging, the classes range from core academics to enrichment and practical skills.
Additional investors in the round include Caterina Fake, Y Combinator, SV Angel, FundersClub, Spectrum28 and Learn Capital.
Sesame Ventures’ mandate to support emerging companies in the areas of tech and mobile was realized after lengthy research into the impact of technology on childhood development.
The Collab+Sesame Fund focuses particularly in the areas of education technology, health and nutrition, and social, cultural and family development. It recently joined Mattel, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Shea Ventures in supporting AR and AI children’s platform Osmo.
And earlier this month, as part of a three-year collaboration to help advance children’s education and learning, Sesame Workshop and IBM Watson introduced the partnership’s first product, a tablet-based cognitive vocabulary app.
