BBC Worldwide and ABC Kids have co-commissioned the Asia Animation Summit 2016 Best in Show winner Bluey from Brisbane, Australia-based Ludo Studio.

Production on the authentically Aussie 2D-animated preschool series created by showrunner Joe Brumm (Charlie and Lola) is now underway with funding from Screen Australia in association with Screen Queensland. Bluey is set to air on ABC Kids and its iview platform in 2019, followed by broadcast on CBeebies Australia.

The 52 x seven-minute series follows the daily adventures of a lovable, six-year-old Australian Blue Heeler puppy that lives with her parents and four-year-old sister. Inspired by the warmth and beauty of semi-tropical Queensland, and Brumm’s own experiences raising two daughters, the series shows how imaginative play can help shape healthy kids.

Ludo’s Charlie Aspinwall (Doodles, #7DaysLater) is producer/executive producer on the series, with the company’s Daley Pearson (Doodles, #7DaysLater) also producing. Richard Jeffrey (Tinga Tinga Tales) is on board as animation director.

ABC head of children’s television Michael Carrington and BBCW’s director of children’s content Henrietta Hurford-Jones are executive producing for ABC Kids and BBC Worldwide, respectively. BBC Worldwide holds the IP’s global merchandise and licensing distribution rights.

The co-commission comes on the heels of Melbourne-based indie prodco Media World Pictures joining Ludo’s production of The Strange Chores, a 26 x 11-minute, 2D comedy series for tweens that follows the supernatural adventures of two teenage, wannabe warriors and a spirited ghost girl. The show was another standout from the Asian Animation Summit, having been pitched at the 2013 edition in Phuket, Thailand.

The Strange Chores is now funded by Screen Australia, in association with Film Victoria and Screen Queensland, and is expected to air on ABC Me in 2019. Canada’s Boat Rocker Rights will distribute the property internationally. Like Bluey, The Strange Chores is also made and set in Australia.
