Pennsylvania-based construction toyco K’NEX has added seven new sets to its line of educational products. The K’NEX Education Building Sets focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning, and each aims to teach kids about these concepts through problem-solving, discovery, exploratory learning and critical thinking.
The line, designed for kids ages six and older, is available at retailers across the US. It includes a variety of Maker Kits (US$39.99 to US$99.99), as well as STEM Explorations products like the Swing Ride Building Set (pictured). The Swing Ride Building Set, meanwhile, teaches kids about how mass affects speed as well as the mechanics behind gearing up and down.
On the pricier end of the spectrum, the K’NEX Education Robotics Building System costs US$399.99 and comes with more than 800 parts, including a control box, four motors and an ultrasonic senor that generates sound waves and reads their echoes to detect and measure distance from objects. The system allows kids to build nine different models.
Previously, K’NEX has campaigned for more STEM-based girls toys with its Mighty Makers line, which was designed to empower girls ages seven and up through creative, story-based building sets. Created by an all-female marketing and design team, each STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) set features colorful rods and connectors and follows the life and career of the included figure, whose job may vary from marine biologist to mechanical engineer.
