Netflix tests gamified streaming experience for kids

The streaming giant is testing a badge reward system that lets kids collect patches after viewing select titles including Trollhunters and A Series of Unfortunate Events.

In an attempt to offer a more interactive experience, Netflix is testing a new feature that gamifies binge-watching for kids.

According to a Netflix spokesperson, the system rewards young viewers with special patches after watching select kids titles. The initiative aims to provide a more fun, social viewing experience by giving kids something to talk about, thus bolstering the potential for families to share more information about their favorite shows. In its statement, the company also said the feature may or may not become part of the official Netflix experience.

Netflix users included in the test have already begun posting images of the patches on social media. The patch shows up on-screen as a red lock symbol in the top corner, and rewards are given after select titlesincluding A Series of Unfortunate Events, Trolls and Fuller Househave been fully viewed. The patches, however, don’t unlock any additional content.

The idea of gamified viewing falls in line with Netflix’s plans to bolster its kid-friendly offerings. The SVOD giant is currently rolling out new parental features, including PIN protection for individual movies and series, and more prominent displays of MPAA ratings. The streamer also made headlines last year with the launch of new interactive choose-your-own-adventure episodes for Puss In Boots, Buddy Thunderstruck and Stretch Armstrong.
