US streamer Hulu has commissioned Toronto’s Aircraft Pictures to produce a live-action TV series based on the Holly Hobbie brand.

Set to premiere this fall on Hulu, the scripted series will later head to linear TV via Family Channel in Canada and Universal Kids in the US.

Produced by Aircraft in association with American Greetings Entertainment, the show is a contemporary take on the story of a fictional 13-year-old singer/songwriter. The brand was first introduced by American Greetings in 1967 and has generated more than US$1 billion in global licensed product sales to date.

Production is scheduled to begin next month on 10 half-hour episodes. Sarah Glinski (Degrassi: Next Class, Degrassi: The Next Generation) will serve as showrunner, and joining her in the writers’ room are Courtney Jane Walker (Degrassi: Next Class) and Cole Bastedo (The Next Step).

Other recent projects from Aircraft include Oscar-nominated animated feature The Breadwinner. In February, Aircraft revealed it is in development on its next animated project, a feature-length film entitled Daughter of Bells co-produced with Toronto’s Wasabi Entertainment.

As for Hulu, the Holly Hobbie order comes as the SVOD continues to ramp up its premium kids content library having recently announced it will revive classic ’90s toon Animaniacs in partnership with the show’s original producersWarner Bros., Steven Spielberg and Amblin Television.
