Netflix’s Alexa & Katie enters sophomore year

The streaming giant’s first in-house multi-cam comedy series has been renewed for a second season, following its global premiere last month.

Alexa & Katie, Netflix’s first in-house multi-cam comedy series, has been greenlit for a second season.

The live-action show featuring two lifelong best friendsone of whom is battling cancerpremiered globally on the streamer last month. The 13 x half-hour series is created by Heather Wordham (Hannah Montana), with Matthew Carlson (Malcolm in the Middle) serving as both showrunner and co-executive producer.

Season two will see the return of Alexa & Katie stars Paris Berelc (Mighty Med) and Isabel May, as well as Tiffani Thiessen (Saved by the Bell), who plays Alexa’s protective mother.

The renewal comes as Netflix continues to expand beyond its raft of original preschool/kids fare into tween and teen content. The streaming giant recently partnered with Italian prodco Rainbow to launch a live-action young adult series inspired by Winx Club. The upcoming show will feature Rainbow’s iconic Winx fairies as real teenagers living together at a magical boarding school.
