In highly anticipated gaming news, the Pokémon Company International and Nintendo have announced that three new Pokémon games are coming to the Nintendo Switch game console this year.

The first game, Pokémon Quest, launched yesterday and will be followed by new role-playing games Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go Evee! on November 16. The next popular core Pokémon role-playing game series will arrive in late 2019. Game Freak, the original creators of the Pokémon video game franchise, is developing all of the new games.

Combining the classic elements of a Pokémon RPG with the motion-control capabilities offered by Switch, the games will include actions such as throwing Poké Balls to catch Pokémon by swinging the Joy-Con controllers. The companies are also working on a  feature that would allow players to transfer characters captured in the augmented reality mobile game Pokémon Go into the upcoming Switch RPGs.

Also unveiled yesterday was the new Poké Ball Plus accessory, a motion-control device that can be used for the two upcoming Let’s Go games in place of a Joy-Con, as well as for Pokémon Go. Launching in November alongside the new games, it lights up with a variety of colors, vibrates and plays sounds when players catch characters.

Game industry analysts have been anticipating this release for several months. Mat Piscatella, NPD’s video game analyst, speculated that the future of the Switch depends on these games, particularly for younger audiences, as it could bring a lot of kids to the platform.
