Thanks to Viacom’s new studio model of producing and licensing new episodes of its own original content to third-party digital or linear platforms, Nickelodeon Animation Studios’ animated comedy Pinky Malinky will premiere exclusively on Netflix later this year as a Netflix Original Series.

Viacom is moving forward with the strategy to help feed the massive global demand for more premium content.

Pinky Malinky was originally ordered by Nick in 2015 as a comedy series that borrows from mockumentary/reality-show formats. The 20-episode series follows the humorous, everyday adventures of Pinky, an infectiously positive hot dog living in a human world who navigates school and life with his two best friends.

Produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, Pinky Malinky is co-created and co-executive produced by Chris Garbutt and Rikke Asbjoern (The Amazing World of Gumball) and executive produced by Scott Kreamer (Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness).

Viacom’s strategy is an interesting one given that the company still plans to launch its own direct-to-consumer streaming service later this year featuring thousands of hours of content from its global library.
