Disney Junior has picked up Toronto-based Guru Studio’s original preschool series Pikwik. The animated show will launch with Disney Junior in the US, Australia/New Zealand, Korea and India.
The 52 x 11-minute series focuses on Suki the hedgehog, Trevor the raccoon, Hazel the cat and Tibor the hippo as they deliver surprises to the residents of Pikwik. The show targets kids ages two to five.
Created by Guru’s executive creative director Frank Falcone, development executive Rachel Reade Marcus and former EVP Mary Bredin, the series focuses on teamwork, responsibility and critical thinking.
Production on Pikwik will begin this summer. Guru plans to expand the brand into toys, apps and additional consumer products to coincide with the show’s premiere around Q4 2019.
In other House of Mouse news, Disney Channel is launching the multiplatform and interactive trivia show Disney QUIZney on July 16. Kids can watch the seven-minute quiz show live on Disney Channel, playing along to win prizes on DisneyNOW.com and the DisneyNOW apps.
Trinitee Stokes (K.C. Undercover) will host the trivia show with live commentary, and the real-time game results will air exclusively on Disney Channel. The trivia show will test viewers’ knowledge of Disney characters and stories with five trivia questions that increase in difficulty with each round. The top 10 daily winners will split US$1,000 in digital gift card prizes.
Disney QUIZney is available in the US, and players must be at least six years old to be eligible to win prizes. Children under the age of 18 need a parent’s permission to enter.
The launch of Disney QUIZney follows in the footsteps of the hugely successful live trivia app HQ. Millions have logged on concurrently to play, and HQ parentco Intermedia Labs recently raised US$15 million in venture-capital investment.
