Streaming giant Netflix is set to adapt Tonke Dragt’s popular medieval adventure novel The Letter for the King into a kids and family series.

Prior to Netflix getting involved, UK-based prodco FilmWave (Sing Street) acquired the international television rights to the Dutch book from Amsterdam-based publishing house Leopold. Dutch-born producer and FilmWave founder, Paul Trijbits (Saving Mr. Banks, The Casual Vacancy) is adapting the series for Netflix alongside Will Davies (How To Train Your Dragon, Puss in Boots). It will begin production in New Zealand this fall.

A premiere date hasn’t been set yet, but the series will eventually be available exclusively to more than 125 million Netflix members in 190 countries worldwide.

Originally published in 1962, The Letter for the King has since been translated into more than 25 languages and won the prestigious Griffel der Griffels Award in 2004 for best Dutch children’s book of the past 50 years. Born in 1930 in Indonesia, Dragt began creating and inventing stories as a way to escape the grim reality of life in a Japanese POW camp with her mother and two sisters in 1942.

In other Netflix news, the streamer has announced that its newest series from DreamWorks Animation Television will premiere on November 16 this year. She-Ra and the Princess of Power will be executive produced by Noelle Stevenson (Lumberjanes, Nimona) and Chuck Austen (Dawn of the Croods, Steven Universe).
