Skydance Media has acquired the live-action film and TV rights to ZAG’s Miraculous—The Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir, and is planning to develop and produce the first live-action adaptations of the property for 2020.
Created by Jeremy Zag, the animated series follows Ladybug and Cat Noir as they protect Paris from villains. It currently airs in more than 120 countries worldwide and boasts more than a million subscribers on YouTube. In fact, the show has racked up 17 billion watch-time minutes for both official and user-generated content.
On the licensing side of things, 350 licensees have signed to be part of the brand’s global consumer products program, including recent additions Ipanema Sandals (flip flops) and Winning Moves (Miraculous Monopoly Junior).
Based in Santa Monica, Skydance Media has been beefing up its kids business lately; the company opened an animation division headed up by former DreamWorks Animation execs Holly Edwards, Kim Mackey, Jessie Carbonaro and Matthew Burke last year.
