Mattel’s premium brand American Girl is kicking off the new year by introducing its 2019 Girl of the Year, Blaire Wilson, to the market. Blaire is a young chef-in-training who wants to bring people together around the dinner table with her culinary skills and people-person nature.
The brand is also hoping Blaire will teach girls about the importance of staying connected to the people they care about, and that this means more than just clicking and swiping. Her story will unfold in a chapter book series written by Jennifer Castle and published by Scholastic. In the first two books, available now, Blaire puts her cooking and decorating skills to good use at her family’s sustainable farm and bed-and-breakfast in upstate New York.
The 18-inch doll has green eyes and curly red hair. Additional items available include an array of outfits, accessories and products to reflect Blaire’s farm life, including a lamb and piglet, party decorations and the full family restaurant. The line is available at all American Girl retail locations in the US, as well as specialty boutiques in select Indigo locations in Canada.
Blaire follows on the heels of a diversity push from American Girl; its Girls of the Year in 2017 (Gabriela McBride) and 2018 (Luciana Vega) both had darker skin, and the toymaker also released its first-ever American Boy doll.
