Mattel and Warner Bros. Pictures Group announced today that they are partnering to bring the Barbie franchise to theaters in its first ever live-action feature film. The untitled movie will star Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, Mary Queen of Scots) as Barbie, and will be co-produced by her prodco LuckyChap Entertainment alongside Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara.

This is the first deal to come out of Mattel’s newly-minted Mattel Films division led by producer Robbie Brenner (Dallas Buyer’s Club, Mirror Mirror). The new business unit is focused on developing and producing movies inspired by the toyco’s franchises.

The chairman of WBPG, Toby Emmerich, said in a statement that the project is a “great start to our partnership with [Mattel CEO] Ynon [Kreiz] and Mattel Films.”

The announcement follows several structural changes for Mattel, including the launch of a global franchise management group with former Saban exec Frederic Soulie serving as SVP of content distribution and business development, overseeing the toyco’s programming sales around the world across all platforms.
