Finland’s Rovio Entertainment is gearing up to remake 22 x 2.5-minute live-action comedy series Angry Birds On The Run into a long-form, single-arc TV special for multiple platforms.

The popular YouTube series developed and produced by Rovio in association with CAKE’s Popcorn Digital arm and Blink Industries (Tulipop) will be adapted into a format-flexible special, which CAKE will sell as a pair of 25-minute eps or a package of four 12-minuters. The property’s London-based distributor will also continue to offer Angry Birds On the Run in its original YouTube format.

Written and directed by Baker Terry (Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared, Waiting for Gumball), Angry Birds On the Run takes plush toy versions of popular Angry Birds characters Red, Chuck and Bomb out of their game environment and into the human world, where nothing makes sense. To get home before they’re locked out of their game forever, the trio must embark on an obstacle-filled journey of discovery.

Since debuting on the Angry Birds YouTube channel last November, the series has generated more than four million combined views.

On the Run is not Rovio’s first foray into live-action Angry Birds content. Competition-based hybrid series Angry Birds: BirLd Cup launched on the IP’s YouTube channel to coincide with the 2018 FIFA World Cup last year, and live-action game show Angry Birds Challenge (working title) is currently in development with New York-based reality TV specialist Big Fish Entertainment (Live PD). All of this live-action content creation is part of Rovio’s new multiyear road map for the property, driven by Sony Pictures’ September 2019 theatrical release of The Angry Birds Movie 2.
