Former Disney and Mattel exec Robert Marick joins Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) as its new EVP of global consumer products and experiences. Marick will oversee the expansion of MGM’s traditional merchandise as well as its interactive and consumer products business, and will develop a global strategy with a focus on core consumer products licensing, digital and gaming, location-based entertainment and direct-to-consumer business.
In his new role, Marick will report to MGM’s COO Christopher Brearton. Marick joins MGM from Discovery Communications, where he served as SVP of licensing and global location-based entertainment. He also held executive consumer product roles at Twentieth Century Fox, where he led CP strategies for franchises like Ice Age and the Simpsons; Disney, where he led the conglom’s toy business; and Mattel, where he served as director of marketing at the toyco.
Marick’s appointment comes hot on the heels of MGM’s recent partnership with Mattel films to develop live-action movies based on the toymaker’s properties. One film will bring Mattel’s line of American Girl books and dolls to life, while another will focus on the classic toy property View-Master. Production on both films will be overseen by producer Robbie Brenner, the new head of Mattel films, as well as MGM’s co-president of production Cassidy Lange.
