Paris-based Lagardère Studios has signed an exclusive first-look deal with online storytelling platform Wattpad to adapt its French-language content into new TV, film and digital projects. Lagardère’s prodco DEMD will get a priority window on all of the French-language content, which it will pick using Wattpad’s machine learning tech, which allows the company to identify stories among the half a billion uploaded to the platform.

This partnership is the latest in a series of global expansion deals Wattpad has struck for its for its user-generated content this year, including a recent partnership with Sony Pictures Television earlier this month. Sony now has a first-look TV deal for up-and-coming content that the two will co-produce.

Wattpad is also sending its stories to Singapore via a partnership with Mediacorp, which will see adapted stories go onto streaming and free-to-air platforms in the country. The companies are adapting scripted series and films based on Wattpad’s writers’ stories and holding contests for Singaporean writers to present new ideas that will be eligible for development.

The storytelling platform also recently teamed up with Times Bridge, the global investments and partnerships arm of one of India’s largest media congloms Mumbai Times Group. The aim is to increase Wattpad’s user base in the country and help Indian writers get their stories adapted into TV shows, films, and digital projects.

To date, Wattpad has more than 70 million users globally and has adapted several of its original YA titles for TV, including Netflix commission The Kissing Booth and the supernatural thriller Light as a Feather for Hulu.
