Former Sony Pictures exec Randy Lake has just been announced as the new chief operating officer of DreamWorks Animation. Beginning in July, he will be responsible for the studio’s strategic planning and primary business operations, including feature and television production, post production, business and legal affairs, finance and technology.

Lake joins DreamWorks from Sony Pictures Entertainment, where he has spent the last 13 years in roles such as SVP of corporate development and, most recently, president of studio operations and Imageworks.

The hire comes as DreamWorks continues to combine its film and television teams, a reorg that started in January, when Margie Cohn took on oversight of film and TV operations in her additional role as president of DreamWorks Animation. The two production units are still operating separately under Cohn, and it’s expected that two animated features will be released each year.

Two months into her expanded tenure, Cohn shuffled the company’s leadership and consolidated operations in several departments. Peter Gal was upped from EVP of development at DreamWorks Animation Television to a brand-new chief creative officer role, with responsibility for preschool, current series, casting, music and creative talent management. Kristin Lowe, meanwhile, was named chief creative officer of features and tasked with overseeing feature development, casting and artistic management.

Cohn also consolidated the features and television divisions for marketing, public relations, business and legal affairs, human resources and recruiting.
